Windows 11 Ready Computers

Microsoft's published minimum requirements are a compatible 64-bit processor with two or more cores at 1 GHz or faster, 4GB of memory, 64GB of available storage, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, DirectX 12 graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a 720p display of nine inches or larger. On business hardware the processor compatibility list is almost always the deciding factor, because TPM 2.0 has been fitted as standard for years and memory and storage can be upgraded after the fact.

Yes, provided the processor is on Microsoft's compatibility list. Business machines from HP, Dell and Lenovo built in the last several generations generally qualify, and they were specified with TPM 2.0 and UEFI from the factory. What varies between individual units is the processor generation, which is why the check has to be done per machine rather than per model line. Every unit is checked against the requirements and has TPM enabled before it is listed. The individual listing states which version of Windows is installed, since a machine can be Windows 11 eligible while still carrying a licensed Windows 10 Pro installation.

Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Machines still running it continue to work, but they no longer receive the standard monthly security updates, which leaves newly discovered vulnerabilities unpatched. Microsoft opened a paid consumer Extended Security Updates programme covering a further period beyond that date, and businesses have their own ESU terms. For most people the cheaper long-term answer is a machine that already meets the Windows 11 requirements.

Pro adds features aimed at business use: BitLocker full-drive encryption, the ability to host a Remote Desktop session rather than only connect out, domain join, and Group Policy management. Home covers everyday personal use and is otherwise the same operating system. If you work into a company network, handle sensitive files, or want drive encryption, choose Pro. Machines shipping with that edition are grouped under Windows 11 Pro computers.

Nearly always the processor. Microsoft maintains a list of supported processors, and a chip below the cut-off will fail the compatibility check no matter how much memory or storage the machine has. The second most common cause is TPM 2.0 being present but switched off in firmware, which can be enabled in the BIOS settings on many business machines. If the processor is the problem, there is no upgrade path and replacing the machine is the only route to a supported version of Windows.

It is when the machine comes from a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher. MAR certification requires the use of genuine Microsoft software and a fresh licensed installation on every unit, and each machine carries a physical certificate of authenticity. That is the difference between a properly licensed refurbished computer and a used machine sold with whatever installation the previous owner left on it. The MAR benefits page sets out what the certification covers, and licence key details are available separately.

No. Windows 11 eligibility is decided by the processor generation, not by whether the machine is new. A refurbished business desktop or laptop from a recent enough generation meets the same published requirements as a new retail machine, at a fraction of the price, and business hardware is generally specified for a longer service life than consumer models at the same price point.
